New to the team: Friederike Fast as Deputy Director

Friederike Fast, born in 1975 in Bielefeld, will take up the position of Deputy Director and Curator at the Kunstmuseum Bonn on July 1, 2024.

“With her extensive experience and expertise as well as her broad network, Mrs. Fast will enrich the team and support the Kunstmuseum Bonn in breaking new creative ground to further establish it as a leading institution for modern and contemporary art,” says Prof. Dr. Stephan Berg, director of the Kunstmuseum Bonn.

Commenting on her appointment, Friederike Fast said: “I am very honored by the trust placed in me and look forward to working creatively with the team of Kunstmuseum Bonn. As a cultural manager and exhibition organizer I see my role as a catalyst for artistic and social processes. Together we will realize forward-looking projects and build bridges between art and visitors!”

Friederike Fast studied photography in Dortmund and cultural, communication and media studies in Leipzig, specializing in cultural practice, communication theory and cultural philosophy. As a curator and member of the founding team at Museum Marta Herford, she has realized numerous groundbreaking exhibitions and projects in Germany and abroad, including art projects in public spaces. She was also Artistic Director of the Lantz’schen Skulpturenpark in Düsseldorf-Lohausen 2022 and the Kunstraum hase29 in Osnabrück. She has worked at the Center of Contemporary Art in Torun, Poland, the AC Project Room in New York, USA, and the University of Paderborn, where she taught as a lecturer. Before her appointment at the Kunstmuseum Bonn, she most recently worked as a research assistant and curator at the Archive of the Avant-Garde – Egidio Marzona (ADA) in Dresden. Among other things, she played a leading role in developing the ADA publication series and actively helped shape the reopening of the museum in spring 2024.

Her curatorial work focuses on socio-political themes, such as in “The Inner Skin – Art and Shame” (2017). Friederike Fast also regularly opens up interdisciplinary and global perspectives and builds bridges between history and the present (“Pedro Reyes: Sociatry – With a Stage for Lina Bo Bardi”, 2022). Publications such as “The unfettered gaze – The Rasch brothers and their influence on modern architecture” (Wasmuth Verlag, 2014) and “Max Bill – No Beginning, No End” (Scheidegger & Spiess, 2008) are standard works. At the same time, her work is characterized by experimental exhibition and mediation formats that incorporate the site in surprising ways (“Welcome to the Labyrinth – Artistic Deception”, 2018). In 2011 she received the Justus Bier Prize for Curators from the Helga Pape Foundation as co-curator of the exhibition “We are all astronauts – universe Richard Buckminster Fuller reflected in contemporary art”.
