The Steps with No Name

A central theme in the oeuvre of Matthias Wollgast (born in 1981 in Bonn; lives and works in Düsseldorf) is the dependence of art on its respective context and the concomitant, constant reevaluation of cultural values through their history and reception.

For The Steps with no Name, Wollgast has transformed an exhibition space at the Kunstmuseum Bonn into a spatial situation with shop, storage and stage or the area behind a stage. On display are objects from previous projects as well as works created especially for the show in Bonn. Some images are repeated: a single motif can reoccur in the form of a drawing, a painting, a cameraless photograph or its reproduction on a postcard, as well as in the framework of an artist’s book or as part of an installation. The point of departure for this complex presentation is the history of the making of the film The Steps with no Name, which focuses on the destiny of its protagonist Ray Mondt.

The jury for the BONN ART AWARD 2017 was convinced by Matthias Wollgast’s intensive investigation of various representational formats and his ceaseless questioning of constructions of the past, as well as by his clever inclusion of the respective exhibition parameters.

The BONN ART AWARD was revised in 2009; since then, it has been linked to an international stipend lasting three or six months. It is awarded every two years, includes an exhibition and an accompanying catalogue, and allocates 10,000 euros to the recipient. In 2017, artists were invited to apply for the prize for the fifth time after its revision.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue, published by Verlag für Moderne Kunst with essays by Stephan Berg, Jan Bonny, Grischka Petri, Maximilian Rauschenbach and Barbara J. Scheuermann.
