Agnes Meyer-Brandis

In 2003, Agnes Meyer-Brandis founded the FORSCHUNGSFLOSS FFUR, a constantly transforming meta-installation in the form of an Institute of Art and Subjective Science. Under this name, the artist is permanently expanding her work series “Tools To Search.” For the Kunstmuseum Bonn, she developed an immersive video and spatial installation. This group of works is characteristic for Meyer-Brandis’s œuvre, which she describes herself as “moving at the intersection of art and science, nature and culture, fact and fction.” For this project, Meyer-Brandis collaborated with the Max Planck Institute in Berlin and created the “Microfluid Oracle Chip & Autopoesis Answering Machine” (MCO & AAM): A minuscule drawing system that is only visible under the microscope. Meyer-Brandis uses it as an oracle that is driven by tiny droplets, which flow through lines of text just like blood runs through veins or juice through a plant: Are these beautiful data? Did I drink enough? Did I turn off the osmometer? Can we reproduce this? – These are all questions asked by the scientists participating in the experimental arrangements, which Meyer-Brandis has written down in microscopically small handwriting. The oracle knows the answer to every question.

Agnes Meyer-Brandis (*1973 in Aachen) studied mineralogy at the RWTH Aachen, sculpture at the Art Academy Düsseldorf and media art at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. She received numerous awards for her work, including one of the working scholarships of the Stiftung Kunstfonds Bonn in 2018. In 2019, her work was presented at the Centre Pompidou, Paris, the FOMU, Antwerp, Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin and others. Agnes Meyer-Brandis lives and works in Berlin.

AUSGEZEICHNET is an exhibition format conceived in cooperation with the Stiftung Kunstfonds. For an overall period of fve years the format enables former scholarship holders of the Stiftung Kunstfonds to exhibit in one of the museum’s collection spaces each autumn. The frst two artists to show their work at the Kunstmuseum were the action artists Mischa Leinkauf and Matthias Wermke in 2016, followed by photographer Viktoria Binschtok in 2017. In 2018, Frauke Dannert put her exhibition’s focus on installation and collages. In the current issue, Agnes Meyer-Brandis conducts artistic research at the interface between art and science.
