Martin Noël

Martin Noël (1956 Berlin – 2010 Bonn) was one of the most important artists to revive the long neglected genre of linoand woodcut, which he enriched by creating innovative
unique forms. The relation between line and plane, which the artist constantly explored in new dialectic movements, is central to Noël’s work. One of his trademarks was – apart from the large-format prints – the treatment of the wood itself: Noël carved lines into the wood so deeply that his works always also present a plastic dimension.

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Martin Noël’s death the Kunstmuseum Bonn shows a substantial exhibition about the artist with works from the mid-1980s up to 2010, the year of his death. About 35 works document Noël’s artistic development from the beginning of his career as a painter in the 1980s to his printing plates, lino- and woodcuts and up to the late radiant paintings he created during the last year of his life, which represent a high point of his work
