VIDEONALE.20

With the 20th edition, the VIDEONALE is celebrating 40 years of festival history in Bonn with an exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Bonn and at various locations in the city. For the anniversary, the Videonale has delved deep into the festival archive. A total of 26 video works were selected for the exhibition, opening up an exciting dialogue between the past and present of video art. Historical video works meet new productions that impressively document the spectrum of what video can do as an art form and what has characterised it as a narrative medium from the very beginning.

The following artists are part of the Videonale programme:
Mark Bain | Mareike Bernien & Alex Gerbaulet | Pauline Boudry & Renate Lorenz | Viktor Brim | Chto Delat | VALIE EXPORT | Ken Feingold | Beatrice Gibson & Nick Gordon | Gorilla Tapes | Philipp Gufler | Akiko Hada | Lynn Hershman Leeson | Ida Kammerloch | Stéphanie Lagarde | Alwin Lay | Lukas Marxt | Angelica Mesiti | Ana María Millán | Marcel Odenbach | Stefan Panhans & Andrea Winkler | Dani ReStack & Sheilah ReStack | Julia Scher | Ana Torfs | Jan Verbeek | YAN Wai Yin | Anna Zett

Even before the opening, the prologue (16.11.2024-13.3.2025) will provide an opportunity to approach the works of VIDEONALE.20. On the opening days (11/12 April 2025) and throughout the duration of the exhibition, the Videonale invites visitors to engage with the works through introductions, resonances, guided tours, workshops and talks. Screenings and performances will take place as satellites in parks, historical buildings and private living rooms. Performative excursions lead along the exhibition stations through the city.

Junge Videonale

Art courses from the Carl von Ossietzky-Gymnasium Bonn (course leader: Elisabeth Oczkowski), the Erzbischöfliches St. Joseph-Gymnasium Rheinbach (course leader: Elizabeth Weckes) and the Kaiserin-Theophanu-Schule, Cologne (course leader: Julia Kellermann) have created their own works in response to the VIDEONALE.20 videos. They can be viewed free of charge in the foyer of the Kunstmuseum Bonn (entrance area and basement) during the museum’s opening hours. The production of their own works was preceded by an examination of works from the VIDEONALE.20 using artistic approach formats, the so-called INTRODUCTIONS.

Admission to the Junge Videonale is free.
